How to Create a Strong Password You Can Actually Use
Simple rules for strong passwords, and how to generate and store them safely.

Why weak passwords fail
Attackers do not guess one password at a time by hand. Software tries millions of common words, names, dates and patterns. Passwords like your name plus a birth year are cracked very quickly, and a password reused on many sites is dangerous when any one of them is breached.
Rules that matter
- Make it long. Aim for 14 to 16 characters or more for important accounts.
- Make it random. Avoid names, birthdays, phone numbers and keyboard patterns like 123456.
- Make it unique. Use a different password for every account, especially email and banking.
- Add a second step. Turn on two-step verification wherever it is offered.
How to generate one
- Open the Password Generator.
- Move the slider to at least 16.
- Keep uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols ticked. If a site rejects some symbols, untick them and make the password longer.
- Press Copy and paste it straight into your password manager or the sign-up form.
Where to keep passwords
Nobody can remember dozens of random passwords. A reputable password manager stores them for you behind one strong master password. Do not keep them in a plain notes file, and never share them in chat or email.
If an account is exposed
Change that password immediately, change it anywhere else you reused it, and check your account for activity you do not recognize.
