Why count words and characters?

Length limits are everywhere: essays and assignments, SEO titles and descriptions, social posts, SMS messages, product listings and job applications. Counting as you type saves you from cutting text at the last minute.

Handy length guides

Search engines shorten titles by pixel width, so treat these numbers as guides, not strict rules.

Reading time

We estimate reading time at 200 words per minute, a common speed for adults. Reading aloud or giving a speech is slower, usually around 130 to 150 words per minute, so a 1,000 word speech takes roughly 7 minutes.

Tips

The tool shows characters with and without spaces, since different forms count differently. Sentence counts rely on full stops, question marks and exclamation marks, so abbreviations such as Dr. can add extra sentences. Your text is counted in your browser and is never stored. To tidy your text, try the Case Converter or the Remove Duplicate Lines tool.
