What makes a password strong?
Length matters more than tricks. Every extra character multiplies the number of guesses an attacker needs. For important accounts such as email, banking and social media, aim for at least 14 to 16 characters with a mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols.
Good habits
- Use a different password for every account. If one site is breached, the others stay safe.
- Use a password manager. You only remember one strong master password, and the manager stores the rest.
- Turn on two-step verification wherever it is offered.
- Avoid personal details such as names, birthdays and phone numbers.
- Never share passwords in chat or email, and change any password you suspect is exposed.

If a site rejects your password
